Is God in Your Boat During the Storm?
When the Miracle Doesn’t Come
We often pray for miracles. We believe that if Jesus is in our boat, the storm will calm instantly, the winds will cease, and we will sail smoothly to the other side. But what happens when the boat takes on water? What happens when the outcome is not what we prayed for?
I faced a season where the storm raged harder than I could bear. I was navigating a critical pregnancy, advised by doctors to stay on bed rest due to spotting and the threat of abortion. Despite the medical reality, my husband and I stood in faith. We believed we would have this baby in a miraculous way. We believed Jesus was in our boat to save the situation.
The Turning Point: The Labor Room
At just 20 weeks, the storm broke. I went into preterm labor.
The physical pain was overwhelming, but the emotional anguish was worse. The doctors told me I was fully dilated and that they couldn’t stop nature from taking its course. We cried out to God, but nothing seemed to help in that labor room.
In the middle of that heartbreak, facing the loss of my child, something supernatural happened. I looked up and saw Jesus standing next to me. He was gently smiling.
He didn’t stop the labor. He didn’t reverse the medical diagnosis. Instead, the Holy Spirit guided my mind to a specific hymn. Over and over, I began singing in my spirit: “Guide me, O Thou great Jehovah, pilgrim through this barren land…”.
The Resolution: Saving the Spirit, Not the Vessel
In the world’s eyes, “nothing good” happened that day. We lost the baby. If we judge God’s presence only by happy endings, we might think He abandoned the boat.
But I learned a profound truth that day: God is always in the storm.
We often think He is there to save the physical vessel—our health, our finances, or our plans. But sometimes, He is there to save us from drowning in our spirit.
He may allow us to lose a few things in the natural world. But His presence ensures that we do not lose our faith. He revives our spirit so that we can stand strong in warfare and future troubles.
Key Takeaways for Your Journey
If you are in a storm right now and the waves are crashing over you, hold on to these truths:
• God’s Goal is Your Faith: He protects the “inner, true self” so that it remains unwavering, even when the world around you shakes.
• Presence Over Outcome: Just because the storm doesn’t stop doesn’t mean Jesus isn’t there. Look for Him. He might be whispering a hymn to your heart rather than silencing the wind.
• Spiritual Survival: He is in the boat to keep your spirit afloat, ensuring you trust in Him regardless of the result.
Prayer: Lord, even if the boat sinks, save my spirit. Let me see Your gentle smile in the middle of my pain. Guide me, Great Jehovah. Amen.
